Airway, Food Tube, Vocal Cords

Airway, food tube, vocal cords

Today I was able to go to Church and stay for all the meetings. However, while singing just one hymn I realized that along the outside of the mass on my neck I have gone into pain. So I am guessing that the mass must also be pressing on my vocal cords. So I may lose my ability to talk. That will be tough just ask anyone who knows me, I will admit that I love to talk. I think I like eating more than talking and I may have to give up both before I die. Yuck, what a rotten thought. But for now my body is telling me that I need to take a nap. So I will listen to my body and write more later.

It is now 8:30 pm, I must have been really tired I slept for nearly 4 hours. Just has I got up we lost electrical power, it was out for nearly 2 hours. Luckily I don’t need oxygen 24 hours a day so I was fine. While the power was out I eat a banana but it came right up on me. Just now I tried the yams, potatoes and carrots leftovers from the other day. Now I just have to pray that that will stay down.

Time for sleep, nothing by mouth after 6 am for a special CT Scan at 9 am it will be done with an IV contrast. Then a second CT Scan at 1:30 to mark my neck for the radiation treatments to follow.

Cleaning out

Today it is a cool damp day out. But that has not dampened my spirits. I started the day with a peach flavored Ensure Clear and a banana. Not a bad breakfast. It is lunch time so in a few minutes I will try to create something to eat. Yesterday I did not vomit once and I would like to make today work out the same way.

I need to clean my stuff out of my old bedroom so we can turn that room into a bedroom for 3 of my granddaughters when the need to stay here. Right now they are already using it, but I want to give them more space. So I just pulled most of my dolls out of a china cabinet that I am giving to an old dear friend. That will free up some space. But I am trying to pace myself so that I don’t go too nuts with feeling good.

I want to be able to attend all three hours of Church tomorrow. I plan to bring my portable oxygen tank with me but I don’t know if I will need to use it. Mom is worried that 3 hours at Church is too much for me. But seeing has I will spend 95% of the time just sitting I don’t think it will be any problem at all. If it does make me feel tired when I get home I can always take a nap.

Lunch was refried beans with taco sauce. It not only tasted good it has stayed down! That of course is a major factor. Now it is time to have dinner leftovers from yesterday so I am having a sure thing.  It feels good to know that I have been able to eat “FOOD” today, and not just drink Ensure Clear. It is good but better has a supplement instead of a meal.

Opps, I took 1 piece of peperoni and it did me in. I lost my supper, oh well, live and learn. But I am still LIVING. That is how I am looking at the way the day has gone. It has still been a good day.

Treatment Plan Change

Change of Treatment

It is a beautiful day, weather wise, a nice dry sunny day, and after a week of rain this is great.

I feel really good and I am back from the doctors. I saw three doctors. They all agree that the mass on my neck has gotten larger. That clearly tells us that the chemotherapy is not working. The doctors say that I understand very well what is happening in my throat. The mass is clearly pressing against the esophagus and interfering with my ability to eat. So it is time to change my treatment plan.

On Monday I will have two different types of CT scan’s the first one is going to let them know exactly what changes have occurred within my body since they found the cancer back in February. The second CT Scan is to mark my throat in preparation for a new round of radiation. The first round of radiation was aimed at the tumor on the adrenal gland,(left one on top of the left kidney), this round of radiation will be aimed at the mass on the left side of my throat. I do not know yet just how soon the radiation therapy will start. The radiation oncologist was refreshingly honest with me and told me that this treatment may NOT work. He cannot guarantee that I will be able to eat solid foods after this round of treatment. I like it when doctors are truthful with me but at least we have something that we can try. I want to try this and I will pray for the Lord to bless me that this works at least for a while.

While we are waiting for the radiation to start and hopefully work the doctor is putting me on a prescription for Ensure Clear. My health insurance will not cover it if I go through my local drug store. Therefore my doctor is calling a local medical supply house and is going to get it through them, this place will even deliver it to the house.

Just to be on the safe side on the ride home from the doctor’s office we stopped and bought some of the Ensure because I didn’t have any left at the house. I am very glad that I did. The doctor called and she is having a little trouble getting through to Louis and Clark and may not be able to place the order until Monday. This way I will have some to get me through the weekend.

Now I have found that foods the consistency of a banana or mashed potatoes seems to stay down. Tonight Mom is going to make twice baked potatoes and use the hand mixer to make sure the mashed potatoes are very well mashed. I told her how I had often fixed mashed potatoes and added mashed carrots to them and that I really liked it. I asked if she would mind doing at least my portion that way tonight. She said we can all eat it that way it sounds good.

The doctors want me to eat whatever solid foods I can manage to keep down. If any of you have ideas about ways that we can cook foods so that they are the texture of mash potatoes and can give me a greater variety of foods that I can eat I would be very grateful. My idea of mixing the potato and carrots was to help me get a greater variety of food and nutrients into my ole body. I have lost almost 30 lbs. since the first of this year and this is a very rough way to lose weight.

College at 60, why not

Great Thursday

Today was a great day, (aside from food, that issue still exists), I had a visit from a couple that are dear friends of mine. Cindy is going to take over doing my Genealogy Corner Booth, at the Scottish Games, in Northampton this summer. If I am up to it I will be there, but all of the planning is be done assuming that I am not able to attend. I figure that way it will be easier on Cindy if I really can’t make it. I am counting on those who have helped me in the past helping me again this year and hoping they can work well with Cindy.

By phone two other dear friends visited me. I like those visits just as much as much as the in person visits. These two friends don’t have cars or computers, the phone is the way for us to keep in touch and it is great.

I am very excited because today I was reminded that BYU offers classes online and that some of them are free. I had no idea just how many they have on the subject of genealogy. So I am going to go to College again. I am starting with a course on how to use military records for genealogy research. It is something I have wanted to do for years. These courses are not for any credits, but I am not looking to get any kind of a degree, just learn more about a subject I have always been interested in. After I finish the 8 classes they offer on genealogy I am thinking I will check out what else I might want to take.

I don’t think I will actually start taking the class until the beginning of next week because I am a new student and need to do all of the registration paperwork. Once that is done I will be able to start the other classes within hours of saying I want to. I have thought about taking classes like this for the past couple of years. I certainly have plenty of time now to do this.

I hope you are all having a great day too.

Great Day

Good Wednesday

Today I woke up feeling really good. Unfortunately solid food still doesn’t like me and I have to even drink things like milkshakes very, very slowly to have them go and stay down.  But on Friday when I talk with my doctor I think we will be able to make some progress in resolving this issue.

I am more and more convinced that the lymph nodes in my throat are pressing on my esophagus and preventing the food from getting down. I just hope that the correction of this problem is a simple one. But, if it requires minor surgery, that would be okay with me.

If you discount the problem with food I had a great day. I hope the rest of you did too!
